Our main program is in La Peña, a small developing community in the mountains of El Salvador. The people of La Peña are warm-hearted and welcoming, have great senses of humor, and approach life with a positive perspective. The close-knit town, which is made up of 36 households, a church, a school, and a soccer field, is considerably isolated from neighboring towns. The closest city to La Peña is Metapán, which is about a 30-minute drive, while the capital, San Salvador, is about a 2.5-3 hour drive. La Peña’s main economy is agriculture; most families own livestock and make their own food. For fun, the community enjoys weekend movie nights at the school, while in addition, the town has its own youth soccer and basketball teams, which occasionally compete in tournaments with teams from other towns.
We take one to two trips per year to La Peña to continue assessment, implementation, and monitoring work on our projects.
